Across the country, at the state and federal level, free speech is being attacked under the guise of campaign finance "reform." Want to do something about it? The Center for Competitive Politics (CCP) is seeking a Legal Intern to join our team during and help us fight political speech regulation.
Institutional Background:
CCP is a non-profit organization founded in 2005 by former FEC Chairman Bradley A. Smith, professor of law at Capital University Law School and of counsel to Vorys, Sater, Seymour, and Pease, and Stephen M. Hoersting, campaign finance attorney and former general counsel to the National Republican Senatorial Committee. CCP’s mission, through legal briefs, studies, historical and constitutional analyses, and media communication, is to educate the public on the actual effects of money in politics, and the benefits of a more free and competitive electoral process.
Responsibilities:
The Legal Intern’s responsibilities will include:
-Researching and writing policy primers, op-eds, and blog posts on various topics of campaign finance regulation, the First Amendment, and political speech.
-Assisting staff counsel by researching, writing and editing amicus curiae briefs.
-Assisting staff counsel by researching and writing comments on pending Federal Election Commission rulemakings, advisory opinions, and policy statements.
-Assisting the public relations department by responding to media inquiries on issues of campaign finance regulation.
-Assisting the other Office Manager and other departments with minor administrative tasks from time to time.
Background and skills:
The ideal candidate will be a law student enrolled in either the first or second year. The candidate should have excellent writing and interpersonal skills, the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines independently of supervision, and an ideological/nonpartisan commitment to the robust protection of the First Amendment and political speech. Experience or interest in the First Amendment, constitutional law, or civil liberties law is a must. Entrepreneurship and excellent interpersonal skills are also required.
Requirements and compensation:
The Legal Intern will be expected to work for a minimum of 6 weeks during the summer of 2008. A moderate stipend is available.
